Ramadhan 1, 1426 AH: Month of Supplication
All praise belongs to the Almighty [swt], the Master of the Universe.
Alhamdulillah we are fortunate to be experiencing the Holy Month of Ramadhan. It is a jubilant month for Muslims as souls are energized and spirits are uplifted. It is time to recharge the spiritual battery in order to sustain the faith during the rest of the year. We are the guests of the Almighty [swt] in this month. How merciful is He who is so exalted, yet invites us to speak to Him. Muslim Youths should take advantage of the open doors of Jannah. There is no better chance for forgiveness other than in this Month of Mercy. Unfortunate is he who is not forgiven in the Month of Ramadhan.
The following is a translation of a short supplication recited daily in the Holy Month:
"O High, O Great, O Pardoner, O Merciful, You are the Great Lord. There is nothing like You. You see and You hear. And this, the Month of Ramadhan, is full of Your Grace and Respect. And You have bestowed on it the honour and distinction more than any other month. And You have made the fasts in this month obligatory for me. This is the Month of Ramadhan, in which You have sent down the sacred Qur’an. It is a guide for the people to the Right Path; it contains clear signs of guidance and distinguishes between right and wrong. And You have made one of its nights as Lailatul Qadr, a night which is better than one thousand months. O one who favours all and is favoured by none! do favour me and save me from Hell along with your favoured ones, and admit me in Paradise, by your Mercy, O the Most Merciful."
In addition to such supplications, Holy Ramadhan is an opportune time to propagate Islam. Be it at school, college, or the workplace, it is incumbent upon Muslims to share the joys of fasting with non-Muslims, to explain the moral and spiritual benefits of fasting, and to invite others towards Islam. In the post 9-11 world, it is the akhlaq of Muslims that can challenge the negative images portrayed in the media.
We must also remember the less fortunate in this Month. The earthquake relief effort in Pakistan demands action from each of us. Let us rise to the occasion by donating generously to the lives that have been shattered by the earthquake, including thousands of mo’mineen and Sayyid families. Send your donations to Islamic Humanitarian Service at 81 Hollinger Crescent, Kitchener, Ontario, N2K-2Y8. Tel: 519 576-7111 Fax: 519 576-8378. A receipt for income tax purposes will be provided.
