Rajab 1 , 1426 AH: Imam’s Virtues
All praise belongs to the Almighty [swt], the Master of the Universe.
The sanctified months of Rajab, Sha’baan, and Ramadhan are upon us, affording us with the opportunity to elevate our souls from this material world, to the higher realms of existence. Numerous historical events occurred in Rajab, the most significant of which was the glorious birth of Amir-ul-Mo’mineen [a] in the Holy Ka’ba.
While mothers of Prophets have been asked to leave the place of worship in order to deliver a child, history records the walls of the Holy Ka’ba splitting open, and inviting Bibi Fatima bint Asad inside. This was the first of many signs to come to prove the superiority and lofty status of Imam ‘Ali bin Abi Talib [a]. Imam [a] was received by the Holy Prophet [s] and greeted him with the words, “Peace be upon thee O Prophet of Allah”. Amir-ul-Mo’mineen [a] says, “The Holy Prophet brought me up in his own arms and fed me with his own morsel. I followed him wherever he went, like a baby camel which follows its mother. Each day an aspect of his character would beam out of his noble soul and I would accept it and follow it as a command.”
Amir-ul-Mo’mineen [a] was with the Holy Prophet [s] in all aspects of his life. Furthermore, at any opportunity the Holy Prophet [s] got, he praised Imam and instructed his companions to follow Imam after his death. As stated by the Prophet [s], Amir-ul-Mo’mineen’s position is like that of Haroon [a] to Musa [a], except that there is no Prophet after our Holy Prophet [a]. The virtues and excellences of Imam [a] are countless – no words can do justice to his status. The Holy Qur’an and hadith are filled with references to this great personality, for he was indeed the most perfect human being on earth. Imam ‘Ali [a], the father of the rest of the 11 Imams [a], was the only suitable match for Bibi Fatima Zahra [s]. After all, how many men in history have come to the public and challenged the masses to ask any question?
The Holy Prophet [s] said, “God has so much exalted my brother Ali that his numerous virtues could not be counted easily: whosoever from amongst you narrates one of his excellences, God will forgive his past and future sins, and whosoever will record one of his excellences, the angels will bless him as long as his writing remains; whosoever will read about his virtues with eyes, the sins of the eye will be forgiven to him. Beware! That man is not steadfast in faith who does not love Ali and does not shun his enemies.”
Muslim Youths must strive to understand this lofty personality by studying his endless virtues. It is only with a proper appreciation of Imam’s [a] position in the eyes of the Almighty [swt], that we can proceed to follow his commandments. It is easy to claim to be a follower, i.e. Shia, of ‘Ali [a], however, it is takes true dedication in faith and practice to realize this claim.
