Jamadi al-Akhar 1, 1426 AH: Unity in Wilayah

All praise belongs to the Almighty [swt], the Master of the Universe.

The unity of the ummah is a popular contemporary topic in many Muslim communities. It is usually in response to the fragmented nature of Muslims worldwide. Although there are numerous core issues that are common, it is unfortunate that Muslims remain divided into different sects and tribal communities. In order to determine the singular entity that can bring about true unity, we need to go back to the fountainhead of Islam, i.e. Holy Qur’an and the Ahlul-bayt [a].

The basic tenants of Islam along with their reasoning and benefits were elucidated in the most elegant manner by Sayyida Fatima Zahra [a] in her famous speech after the death of the Holy Prophet [s] in Medina. At that critical juncture in history, whilst defending the rights of her husband, Amir-ul-Mo’mineen [a], Bibi Fatima [a] explained the key to the unity of the ummah in the following manner:

"Allah has designated obedience to us (the Ahlul Bayt) as a means of order in the nation (of Islam), and (has designated) our (the Ahlul Bayt) leadership as the means of safety from division (of the Muslim nation).”

Our Lady Fatima [a] makes it very clear that the only way to unite the nation of Islam is by accepting the leadership, i.e. wilayah, of the Ahlul-bayt [a]. Thus, it behooves the followers and lovers of Sayyida Fatima Zahra [a] to warmly reach out to those who hold on to the rope of Imamah and Wilayah. It is time for leaders of the various ethnic Shia communities (in the multicultural cities of the West) to create a platform of unity under the flag of wilayah. This movement needs to start with the youth, who generally tend to better embrace ethnic diversity within followers of the Ahlul-bayt [a].

Strategic alliances with the rest of the Muslim world may be a worthy long-term objective; however it is imperative for the lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] to have one common and unified voice. As explained by Sayyida Zahra [a], wilayah is the key to our safety and order. Therefore, let us strive to breakdown barriers between Shia communities, and put aside our differences in the name of our Lady, Sayyida Zahra [a].
Inshallah we pray that the next generation of the followers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] can take the concept to a higher and practical level, in achieving true unity under the flag of the awaited Imam al-Hujjah [a].
