1st Muharram 1426 AH: Understanding Azadari
All praise belongs to the Almighty [swt], the Master of the Universe.
As the lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] continue to commemorate the Tragedy of Kerbala, the world is witnessing the magnitude of Imam Husayn's [a] sacrifice. When non-Muslims see grown men weep, crowds of people wearing black, demonstrations in downtown streets, and the expression of deep emotional and spiritual links to Kerbala, they wonder what is going on, and most importantly, they ask why. Such is the eternal mission of Imam Husayn [a]; for it is a universal message of the victory of freedom over slavery, of justice over oppression, and of Islam over kufr and hypocrisy.
There are numerous ahadith in Islamic literature about the importance of Azadari (commemoration of the tragedy). The ahadith assist us in understanding the significance of Azadari. The following are selected words of wisdom from the Ahlul-bayt [a] on this topic:
"The one for whom the day of A'ashura is a day of tragedy, grief and weeping, Allah The Mighty, The Glorious, shall make the Day of Judgment, a day of joy and happiness for him". - Imam Ali ar-Ridha [a]
"Surely, Allah has chosen for us followers (Shiites), who assist us and are happy at our happiness and are sad in our sadness." - Amir-ul-Mo'mineen Ali bin Abi Talib [a]
"Surely, I have never brought to mind the martyrdom of the children of Fatimah [a] except that I have been choked with tears due to it." - Imam Sajjad [a]
"On the Day of Judgment, you shall intercede for the ladies and I shall intercede for the men; every person who has wept over the tragedy of Husayn [a], we shall take him by the hand and lead him into Paradise." - Holy Prophet [s] telling Sayyida Fatimah Zahra [a]
"The humans, the jinn, the birds and the wild beasts (all) mourned and wept over (the tragedy which befell) Husayn Ibn A'li [a]" - Imam Muhammad al-Baqir [a]
Thus, it is clear that mourning for Imam Husayn [a], his noble family, and his devout companions is highly recommended and a core part of our faith. We therefore pray that Muslim Youths continue to commemorate the Tragedy of Kerbala in the next few weeks, and that the Azadari brings about a better understanding of Islam, and the active preparation for the Awaited Imam [a].
