15th Dhul-Hijjah 1425: Preparing for Muharram

All praise belongs to the Almighty [swt], the Master of the Universe.

As the month of Dhul-Hijjah comes to an end, Muslim Youths ought to reflect on the past year and plan ahead for the new Islamic year; 1426 A.H. Dhul-Hijjah was a month filled with significant events that exemplify the superiority of the Ahlul-bayt [a]. In addition to the Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha, the month includes, amongst other events, the perfection of religion at Ghadeer, the success of Islam over Christianity at Mubahila, and the blessed marriage of Amir-ul-Mo'mineen [a] to Sayyida Fatima Zahra [a].

However, it is now time to welcome the moon of Muharram; the moon that brings with it the eternal message of Kerbala. What a unique way to welcome a new year! Instead of the usual celebrations, the Shia of Ali [a] remember the Tragedy of Kerbala; an event that changed the direction of history. The mission of Imam Hussain [a] must be kept in mind when welcoming Muharram. Imam stated the following when departing from Medina:

"I have risen (against Yazid) as I seek to reform the ummah of my grandfather. I wish to bid the good and forbid the evil, and follow the way of my grandfather and my father, Ali bin Abi Talib."

Thus, with the upcoming azadari, majaalis, lectures, and tabligh programs, Muslim Youths must be ready to reform themselves. The Global University of Imam Hussain [a] is about to open, and we must ensure that full advantage of this learning opportunity is taken.

In addition to our expressions of love towards the Ahlul-bayt [a], and sharing the pain of the Tragedy of Kerbala, and our expressions of hate towards the enemies of the Ahlul-bayt [a], we must also take this opportunity to rid ourselves from the evils within us. Let each blow to the chest during matam (latmiyyah) be a symbolic slap on the face of Yazid [l]. Let our tears be the spiritual solution that dissolves our sins, for we can only hope that the tears become worthy of the handkerchief of Sayyida Fatima Zahra [a]. Moreover, let us pray that our azadari be accepted as a sincere expression of love and dedication towards the Ahlul-bayt [a].
